Deutsche Telekom, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Verizon, and Yahoo yesterday formed the Open Networking Foundation (ONF), a nonprofit organization devoted to promoting a new approach to networking called Software-Defined Networking (SDN). More than 17 companies are following the founders, including major equipment vendors, networking and virtualization software suppliers, and chip technology providers.

Founders and following members believe that technologies around the Internet architecture are demanding a more rapid development.
